At Kenetrek, we have had the incredibly good fortune of personally taking 14 mountain sheep and goats between us over the years. Because of our experience hunting in the mountains, Bob and I are often asked what equipment we take along on our backpack hunts. Although our lists change quite frequently, we have made available for download our latest and greatest backpack hunting equipment list. Recognize that this type of hunt can be extremely brutal requiring you to carry all of your gear on your back at least 10 mountain miles every day. Therefore lightweight everything is very important. There is no room for creature comforts. If you don't use it, you certainly don't want to carry it around on a 10 day hunt. On the other hand, going too light can have catastrophic consequences!
We have provided the hardcore backpack hunting list because it is the most difficult to prepare for. Obviously we will add equipment as our ability to carry it increases. For example, our typical Montana elk hunt from a camp we can drive to will also include a wall tent with a pack stove, sleeping cots, camp chairs, coolers, additional clothing, and large amounts of good food and beverages.
We hope this list will help you cover the equipment that we believe is essential. Happy hunting this fall and be sure to let us know how you do.
Sincerely,
Jim Winjum
